Hi,
Over the past 6 months, my ex-boyfriend has been uploading explicit pictures of me online taken whilst we were together. This ISN’T illegal in the UK, the closest I could get was a harassment charge, and that’s only because he repeatedly did it despite my constant begging for him to stop. The current laws just don’t deal with the situation.
I’ve drafted this template email. Please send it to your local MP. You can find their details by clicking HERE. All you need to do is add your name. If enough people raise this issue it WILL get discussed.
Other countries are criminalising revenge porn, the UK needs to catch up.
Hello,
I know someone who has recently been the victim of a rising online trend called “revenge porn”. My friend’s ex-boyfriend uploaded dozens of explicit pictures of her online - in a deliberate attempt to humiliate her. It’s an incredibly stressful experience that leaves the victim feeling powerless; it can also result in the person losing their career, their future job prospects and damaging relationships.
This is currently legal in the UK. There are no laws to protect her.
This man’s job will not be lost and his future career prospects and relationships will not be damaged. He will not have a criminal record, but he will have spitefully splashed damaging images of a young girl across the internet for the world to see.
It doesn’t matter that the images were taken in the first place, she trusted him, and he asked her to. It’s an abuse of trust, and a horrendous invasion of privacy.
If she doesn’t want them online, they shouldn’t be online. The same goes for anyone. She’s become an unwitting porn star and there’s nothing she can do other than ask the websites to take the images down. She routinely has to convince them of this. It shouldn’t be a case of a website being kind, it should be a legal requirement.
This trend is on the rise; apps like snapchat and kik have increased sexting. Camera phones increase people’s ability to take explicit pictures and sharing them is easier than ever.
This needs to be investigated and made in to a specific criminal offence. Current harassment laws just don’t cut it.
Various countries have started to catch their law up with this trend; Israel classifies revenge porn as a sexual offence. Individual states in the US have criminalised it. The UK needs to follow suit.
Please help.
Thanks,
